El ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, José Antonio García Belaunde, informó que el economista Hernando de Soto dejará de ser el coordinador que impulse la ratificación del Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) con Estados Unidos y será reemplazado por el embajador de Perú en Washington, Felipe Ortiz de Zevallos.

Según explicó, esa decisión fue adoptada por el cambio de circunstancias políticas en Estados Unidos, donde el Congreso asumirá funciones con una nueva mayoría parlamentaria, del Partido Demócrata, que deberá ratificar o no el acuerdo comercial con Perú.

El canciller dijo que el presidente Alan García nombró como su representante personal a De Soto cuando la nación norteamericana atravesaba una fase electoral y cuando los legisladores recién se iban a reunir después de los comicios parlamentarios.

“Ahora tenemos una situación distinta. El 15 o 20 de enero se instala el Congreso estadounidense y ya va a trabajar permanentemente en Washington, por consiguiente, el coordinador no puede ser Hernando de Soto que vive en Lima”, refirió.

Agregó que el economista seguirá haciendo su labor, especialmente en convencer a los congresistas para apoyar al TLC, pero aclaró que la coordinación diaria será efectuada por el embajador Ortiz de Zevallos.

De otro lado, García Belaunde deploró las críticas del ex candidato presidencial Ollanta Humala, quien rechaza cualquier acuerdo de carácter comercial con Chile.

“No entiendo la lógica de esas críticas. Es fácil atacar pero no veo ninguna propuesta concreta para reforzar las relaciones con nuestro vecino del sur”, comentó.

El jefe de la diplomacia peruana sostuvo que ambos países construyen una relación amistosa por tratarse de naciones vecinas, aunque reconoció que el armamentismo chileno es “una fuerte preocupación”.

Sin embargo, señaló que esa compra de armamento chileno obedece al canon cuprífero de ese país que va a las fuerzas armadas para comprar armas y demás equipo bélico.

“Además se nos ha dicho más de una vez que ese canon cuprífero va a desaparecer, por lo cual una fuente de esa preocupación tendería a aminorarse”, destacó.
